Choosing your NAT Aware Proxy Address
BroadVoice has several proxy servers you can choose from. Try pinging them individually and pick the one with the shortest ping time. This is the name you enter identically in both the Sip Proxy AND Out Bound Proxy configuration options in the SIP Proxy section below.

    Example:

    # ping proxy.lax.broadvoice.com

    PING proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128) 56(84) bytes of data.

    64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=41 ms

    64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=2 ttl=47 time=31 ms

    64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=3 ttl=47 time=58 ms

Which ever proxy is closer (has a shorter ping time) is the proxy you want to use.
    Choose one from:

    proxy.lax.broadvoice.com
    proxy.dca.broadvoice.com
    proxy.mia.broadvoice.com
    proxy.atl.broadvoice.com
    proxy.chi.broadvoice.com
    proxy.bos.broadvoice.com
    proxy.nyc.broadvoice.com

The bottom of the Line1 screen is as follows:

  13. Choose an appropriate Voice Quality setting by selecting a corresponding Codec setting.
    • G711u offers the best BroadVoice Sound Quality
    • G726-32 offers excellent BroadVoice Sound Quality
    • G729 offers very good BroadVoice Sound Quality

  14. Click Save Settings at the bottom of the page. The page will return in 8 seconds and the Phone 1 LED on the device will illuminate to indicate that the device is registered.

  15. Check for dial tone and enjoy the BroadVoice service.

QoS (Quality of Service)

The Linksys Broadband Router with 2 Phone Ports also maintains an effective Quality of Service (QoS) application.

QoS preserves speech/audio quality by reserving a portion of the available broadband speed for the Voice application. QoS will constrict the available bandwidth available for non VoIP (audio) data to upload out to the internet through the Linksys RT31P2-NA. Once enabled, this QoS feature occurs only when a VoIP call is active via the Linksys RT31P2-NA.

Following is a simple method for enabling voice QoS on the Linksys RT31P2-NA:

  1. From the main menu bar at the top of the RT31P2 screen, click on the Applications & Gaming button.
  2. In the Applications and Gaming Menue, select QoS on the far right.
  3. In the Voice QoS section at the bottom of the screen click the Enable radio button.
  4. Select either Auto Detect or Manual radio buttons. If Manual is selected, then a pre-determined amount of bandwidth to be reserved must be input to the adjacent parameter field.
  5. Click Save Settings at the bottom of the page. The page will return in 8 seconds.

QoS settings can be confirmed by performing a bandwidth speed test (at http://nyc.speakeasy.net) during an active VoIP call. These results should differ from broadband speed test results while no VoIP call is active.
