To configure the X-Lite softphone to work
with BroadVoice, please complete the following steps.
While you may use a SIP softphone with BroadVoice,
please remember that BroadVoice does not endorse any specific
softphones, and does not provide support for softphone software.
For software support with X-Lite or X-Pro, please visit the Counterpath/XTen
support page. |
 |
The soft client should
NOT be activated when a phone adapter is currently active
on the same account. Having more than one device active
on your account at the same time will result in the account
being suspended.
If your account has been suspended, please contact
for assistance. |

BroadVoice utilizes network authentication protocols for the security
of your account. Therefore, you will need to input where indicated
the 10 digit BroadVoice authentication password provided to you by
a BroadVoice customer service representative. It is intended to prevent
anyone other than you from configuring another device and making
calls on your account at your expense. Your password may be reset
upon your request or by a BroadVoice representative as needed.
BroadVoice permits only one device to be active per user account.
Therefore, you must deactivate/disconnect any other devices from
the BroadVoice number you plan to use with your softphone.
- Visit Counterpath's XTen web site to download
the softphone application.
- Install and open the X-Lite application on your computer.
- Have the X-Lite skin displayed on your desk top
- Click on the Menu button (highlighted below in red).
- From the Menu screen, right click on Sip Account Settings

- In the SIP Accounts screen click on the Add... button
- Configure the X-Lite SIP Properties settings as follows:
- Display Name (Optional): Your Name
- User Name: Your 10 digit BroadVoice number
- Password: Your 10 digit authentication Password provided by BroadVoice
- Authorization User Name: Your 10 digit BroadVoice number
- Proxy (see Choosing Your Proxy below): proxy-xxx.broadvoice.com
BroadVoice offers multiple proxy address locations for you to choose from in order to maximize your XLite experience with BroadVoice.
Selecting the best proxy is a two (2) step process.
- First you must choose the correct proxy address for your location. See Choosing Your Proxy below.
- Then, you will use the best proxy location with a slight modification in the Proxy Address field. The proxy address you will use will have a hyphen ( - ) between the word proxy and the location identifier (ie. proxy-nyc.broadvoice.com) that is best for you. See the illustration below for an example of a properly entered proxy location.
The use of a hyphen ( - ) in your proxy address location will allow your X-Lite program to take advantage of BroadVoice's support of the robust DNS SRV networking standard. For additional technical information about DNS SRV visit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRV_record
or
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-DNS+SRV
or
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=232025
- Choosing your proxy
BroadVoice has seven (7) proxy servers you can choose from. Try pinging them individually and pick the one with the shortest ping time. This is the name you enter in the Proxy section above
Example
# ping proxy.lax.broadvoice.com
PING proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=41 ms
64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=2 ttl=47 time=31 ms
64 bytes from proxy.lax.broadvoice.com (147.135.8.128): icmp_seq=3 ttl=47 time=58 ms |
Which ever proxy is closer (has a shorter ping time) is the proxy you want to use.
Choose one from:
- proxy.lax.broadvoice.com
- proxy.dca.broadvoice.com
- proxy.mia.broadvoice.com
- proxy.atl.broadvoice.com
- proxy.chi.broadvoice.com
- proxy.bos.broadvoice.com
- proxy.nyc.broadvoice.com
- Select the Voicemail Tab and set your options as shown below:

- Select the Topology Tab and set your options as shown below:

- Select the Presence Tab and set your options as shown below:

- Select the Advanced Tab and set your options as shown below:

- When complete, click the OK button at the bottom of the Properties window.
- X-Lite 3.0 allows for one SIP account to be configured. This box permits the user to Remove and/or edit the SIP Account. To edit the SIP account click the Properties... button.
Ensure that a green check is present in the Enabled check box in the upper left corner.

- Click the Close button to return to the X-Lite skin and register your X-Lite softphone on your BroadVoice account.
- When registration is complete, the X-Lite display window will indicate "Ready – Your username is: XXXXXXXXXX."
If your X-Lite 3.0 display window displays a registration error message code such as 401 or 404 then re-enter your BroadVoice number and password in to the Account tab. Be sure to eliminate any extra characters and/or spaces.
The X-Lite client should be fully exited when use of the client is complete. Otherwise, inbound calls will continue to be routed to your soft client as opposed to returning back to your BroadVoice adapter by default.
You can now make and receive calls using the X-Lite 3.0 softphone client and your BroadVoice account. For best audio results, consider using a premium headset with microphone. This will help reduce the possibility of echo from adjacent speakers and microphone.
Click on the Menu button and then click on Options for additional basic and advanced settings options.
